Wilander vs McEnroe: opposite views on Federer's future

by Mauro Cappiello

Legends from the past have different opinions about Roger Federer's chances to add more Majors to his collection of trophies.

In his column on "L'Equipe", the day after the Wimbledon final against Novak Djokovic, Mats Wilander wrote he doesn't think the Swiss can still have the prospect of winning at least another Slam event. "Simply because for him it doesn't matter anymore. When you look at him after a defeat, you have the impression that it counts more for us and for the history of Wimbledon, than for himself".

It's not the first time the former number one from Sweden expressed doubts about Roger Federer's chances to compete against top players in top occasions. After the Swiss' French Open defeat against Ernests Gulbis, Mats had focused on his "backhand gap" against his major rivals. "In Australia I saw Stefan Edberg talk to him about it, but, at his age, I think that it's too late to change something."

John McEnroe, who is tied with Wilander and now Djokovic at 7 singles Major titles, doesn't share the same view. "Roger has been so great for so long, I thought he could still win another one and, of course, his best chance for a title would come at Wimbledon," the American said after the final of the Championships.

"He was moving much better than I thought he could. I thought he played incredible, that final was one of the best matches I've ever seen. The way he played, you have to give him a chance again, maybe he can catch one of these top guys on an off-day."

You can express your opinion about Roger's chances in the poll we have created little after the start of his partnership with Stefan Edberg.
