Federer has no more doubts on his real tennis idol

by Mauro Cappiello

Do you remember when Roger Federer talked about the Edberg vs Becker rivalry as an inspiration for him growing up and approaching professional tennis?

In the early years of his career and up to the start of his partnership with Stefan Edberg, the Swiss stated in several interviews that he had shifted from the German to the Swede to finally like and support both. But that doesn't seem the case anymore.

A couple of interviews in the last two weeks suggest he has no more doubts about who his real tennis idol is.

At the start of the Australian Open, he went through a quick Q&A session at Game, Set and Mats, the live studio broadcast with Mats Wilander and Annabel Croft. Here's what he replied to the question on childhood idols.

A few days before, Federer was asked about his role model in tennis and life during an interview with Italian women's magazine "Io Donna". "The Swede Stefan Edberg, my idol" - Federer answered. "He is a real gentleman, admired by everybody for his fair play."

Those magic two years with Stefan really made the difference!
