On Tuesday, just before his first match at the Kings of Tennis against Mikael Pernfors, Stefan Edberg was involved in a Twitter chat made possible by the ATP Champions Tour official account. Fans were allowed to ask Stefan their personal questions and he replied to many of them with his usual kindness. In the end, he chose the best question and the author received a special award, a t-shirt of the Kings of Tennis event, signed by Stefan Edberg himself (picture). Here's the full transcript of the Twitter chat. Our question was the first to be answered!
Stefan Edberg at the end of the Twitter chat, shows the t-shirt won by @dreistreifen for his question
McEnroe wanted you in the ChampionsTour badly, you always said no until 2008. What made you change your mind?
@stefanstennis Just wanted to try it out to see how it was. A few events a year is nice
Which player not in your era would you have loved to have played against and why?
@NeCl73 I would have loved to play Federer, he's probably the greatest player of all time. Also Nadal, we're so opposite in our styles
Stefan Edberg, do you think your style of classic serve and volley tennis can be as successful in today's time and age?
@madhu_ I think a successful combination would be to serve and volley 40/50% of the time. That would be so unpredictable, tough to play.
Stefan, have you seen Söderling? How is he doing? Btw, what about the future of Sweden?
@alcalejon I've only seen him once or twice in the last year. He's doing better but not well enough to make a comeback yet.
If there was one thing you could have done in your career what would it be?
@Hilldog07 Win the French Open. But I did win it as a junior at least!
Which tennis player do you enjoy watching most these days?
@Hilldog07 I would say all the top players, the top four. But obviously I have a liking for Federer and the way he plays and moves.
Who is the next up and coming grand slam winner in your opinion out of the youngsters in tennis?
@Hilldog07 Very good question! I don't have the answer. I think there are a few knocking on the door but they have a way to go still.
Who was your greatest rival in your professional tennis career?
@ssm5013 Boris Becker I would say. So many great Wimbledon finals.
How were you influenced by Borg? What created your unique style?
@noelhoig I was inspired by his manner on the court, he was a role model. But I chose my own game.
You used to play serve and volley a lot. Do you think more (young) players should be playing that kind of tennis?
@Mariska_1980 I think playing more serve and volley will give you benefits if you di it well, for sure.
Who was your favorite player to play against while you were on the ATP tour?
@Nic_Leigh I most enjoyed playing against the top players, Becker, McEnroe, Lendl. I liked the challenge
Stefan, what's your take on polyester strings and how it's affected the game? Mostly baseline rallies and a lot less S&V!
@MisterPigz I think the strings have really made a difference in the game today. You can generate so much more spin and control.
Is it still possible that a player with serve and volleystyle reaches top 5 in the world?
@Tijmenl It would be very difficult. If I were playing today I would maybe play s&v half of the time, not 90% of the time as I used to.
What is the best piece of advice you have ever received?
@xenon21 Believe in yourself. It helps.
How far away is Laura Robson from great things?
@Hilldog07 She has a lot of potential. Still some way to go I would say.
Your backhand was one of the best in your era? Who has the best backhand in your opinion in the current era?
@xenon21 I think Djokovic. Wawrinka too for a one-hander.
Predictions for the remaining slams this year??
@tanujak I don't see anyone but the top four winning. I think there's a big chance they will win them all. Berdych and Tsonga contenders.
If you hadn't been a tennis player what would you have done?
@xenon21 I've thought about it many times and I have no idea!
Stefan, if u had to pick a men's doubles partner + a mixed one, who would they be? u may choose from retired/active players (ann. selected by Stefan Edberg as the best question)
@dreistreifen Men's I would pick McEnroe, for a mixed partner I would pick Serena for her power.
