The Swede, who is about to end his career, defeats in three sets the Wimbledon champion, seeded number 5
NEW YORK. They had already adopted him in 1991, when he had played a delightful tennis and had ruled Courier in the final. «Playing – he said – the best tennis of my life». They had been amazed in 1992 when he had doubled come-back after come-back sealing the great achievement with the 5 hour-26 minute record marathon against Chang and then submitting Sampras on the finish line.
And yesterday, the Americans were waiting for their little blond good-looking Swede Stefan Edberg at the farewell party, after 54 consecutive presences. Good bye, serve and volley champion, who leave tennis this year, good bye, artist of the times gone. And instead no.
The net dancer didn’t agree and, reversing the forecast, sent off the in straight sets the Wimbledon king, Richard Krajicek. He didn’t suffer, he only worked with lancet on the big Dutchman’s aching back and poor concentration, but he received lots of applauses anyway. Or rather, of whistles, as they use down here, at Flushing Meadows.
Five break points against him and five first serves in, the service unbroken, an accurate match in 1 hour and 44 minutes. The usual words suited to the occasion: «I did what I had to do, I was very calm and relaxed. Everything was right, I’m happy this way. Don’t look at the score, it’s never easy to beat the Wimbledon champion. I hope to be in the tournament in the second week as well. If I play well, I can do some good matches. The important thing is just to be healthy».
