«It felt very well considering the circumstances. I haven't been on court since Paris apart from training 45 minutes with Björkman in Shanghai», Johansson told who had married his Gisella 12 days ago.
Johansson won a highly dramatic final against Stefan Edberg with 14-12 after having saved three match points. The crowd was offered great entertainment and Edberg was impressive with his pure one handed backhand. The former world's number one opened the tournament inactively and had to yield Magnus Larsson 6-1 in the first group match! «I was a bit rusty at the beginning but then it went quite good. It is always a bit hazardous to play tie break and the actives went little kindly into the ball duels», the always polite Swede explained.
Jonas Björkman was one of those who were offering themselves, and the happy son of Alvesta (city in Småland) was frequently imitating other players and styles of playing. Still the tactics were not profitable in terms of the results and Björkman was beaten in the group match by Thomas Enqvist, Magnus Gustafsson and Thomas Johansson.
«It was hard to find one's game as the matches were that short. But it was fun that so many came and watched, despite it was almost Christmas. Many people were coming in order to see the living legends Edberg and Wilander», Björkman got to know.
Scandic Challenge was played in a new format with many short matches this year. Every player took part idealisticly and the whole surplus of 500 000 SEK goes to investments into Swedish youth tennis.
