Stefan Edberg will play in an unprecedented exhibition event to be held in Wimbledon next year around the middle of May. The tennis show will have the aim to test out the new Wimbledon complex and will also feature other former tennis stars such as Tim Henman, Andre Agassi, John McEnroe, while Pete Sampras is believed to have declined.

Wimbledon is usually out of bounds outside the main tournament, and it is unheard of in modern times for it to be played on earlier in the season.

The exhibition matches would be five weeks before the main event, when major tour players would be preparing for the French Open.

It would allow the club to monitor air-conditioning systems and the BBC to gauge acoustics.

The roof, which will close in 10 minutes, should be installed by February.
