Tennis history comes alive at the Berenberg Bank Classics: Stefan Edberg and Goran Ivanisevic will play each other in the eagerly awaited exhibition match held in conjunction with the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix on Monday, 22 April.
Stefan Edberg was a shooting star. In his first year as a pro in 1984 he won the Davis Cup with Sweden and the demonstration tournament at the Olympic Games in Los Angeles. His first Grand Slam win came a year later at the Australian Open. On 13 August 1990 he became the world No. 1 for the first time and headed the rankings for a total of 72 weeks.
Goran Ivanisevic reached the Wimbledon final on four occasions. 2001 was the year when he won his only title at the tennis Mecca in the London suburb. At the 1992 Olympic Games he won the bronze medal – it was at the same time the first ever Olympic medal for the independent Croatia. His rose to his highest world ranking on 4 July 1994 when occupying the No. 2 spot. “In staging the duel of legends, we’re offering our audience another top highlight,” said Tournament Director, Markus Günthardt. “Last year, the spectators were thrilled by John McEnroe and Pat Cash. I’m sure Stefan Edberg and Goran Ivanisevic will put on a great show for them too.”
The Berenberg Bank Classics in conjunction with the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix is organised by the sports marketing agency belonging to the three-time Davis Cup winner Carl-Uwe Steeb and Berenberg Bank as title sponsor. “In engaging Stefan Edberg and Goran Ivanisevic, the Berenberg Bank Classics will showcase two tennis icons who couldn’t be more different,” said Carl-Uwe Steeb. “Stefan Edberg, Boris Becker’s rival in Wimbledon for many years, enthralled the crowds with his brilliant serve-volley game and was a real gentleman both on and off court. Goran Ivanisevic, on the other hand, was a hothead who exasperated his opponents with his canon serves. The spectators at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix can look forward to a real tennis treat.” Oliver Holtz, director of the Berenberg Bank branch in Stuttgart, added: “The spectators know that the big names in tennis come to Stuttgart for the Berenberg Bank Classics. Having watched McEnroe, Wilander, Lendl and Leconte, we are now looking forward this year to seeing Ivanisevic and Edberg.”
