At the start of the second set of the 1987 US National Indoor final in Memphis, Jimmy Connors twists his right knee hitting a smash and is forced to retire.
Stefan Edberg wins the 11th title of his career, his second in Memphis. Of the 42 singles finals won by the Swede, this would be one of the two ended with the opponent retiring, the other being the Bercy 1990 final against Boris Becker.
