Stefan Edberg and Anders Jarryd inaugurate the Swedish Open in Båstad in July 2010
Four former world number ones, two Olympic silver medalists and 37 Grand Slam titles. This is about nothing but the highest tennis nobility in Legends Doubles as determined under SkiStar Swedish Open. Not only the ATP tournament in Båstad showcases many of today's top players, but on July 8th and 9th the audience will also be receive great entertainment from a number of the biggest stars of all time.
Doubles tournaments with former stars rise great success during the four Grand Slam events, and, although much focus is just on entertainment, the players are still very high standard, which ensures good games and close matches.
Now that the Legends Doubles premieres in Sweden, it is about a rarely seen star parade with former world number ones Stefan Edberg and Mats Wilander at the top.
Edberg has been world number one in both singles and doubles and at the top of his records there are six singles and three doubles titles in Grand Slam. Former world number one Wilander has seven Grand Slam titles in singles and one in doubles. Anders Järryd and Jonas Björkman both have been ranked as the world's best doubles players and have eight and nine titles in Grand Slam.
With his victory at the Australian Open in 2002, Thomas Johansson is Sweden's last Grand Slam winner in singles and took the 2008 Olympic silver medal. Joakim Nyström took the doubles title at Wimbledon in 1986 teaming up with Mats Wilander.
Doubles specialist Simon Aspelin won the US Open in 2007 and crowned his successful career when he was paired with Thomas Johansson and won the silver medal in the Beijing Olympics of 2008.
Mikael Pernfors took the tennis world by storm when, with his crowd-pleasing game, reached the final of the French Open, where he was stopped by Ivan Lendl.
This is probably the most distinguished line-up of all time in a tournament on Swedish soil and the doubles configurations are of great interest. With one exception, we do not see the old doubles conformations with Mats Wilander playing together with Thomas Johansson, Joakim Nystrom at Jonas Björkman's side and Simon Aspelin camping out together with Mikael Pernfors.
The exception is one of the best Swedish pairs of all time: Stefan Edberg and Anders Järryd, a duo that won the Australian Open and US Open in 1987, and that same year took three more doubles titles.
In total Edberg/Järryd won twelve doubles titles, but the list would have been definitely much longer if Edberg had not put doubles a little aside for a few years when he focused on singles.
The competition is extremely tough, but it would be no surprise if in Båstad 51-year-old Anders Järryd and five years younger Edberg proved that the old generation still rules.
