Stefan Edberg, along with 13 time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal and former World n.1 Ana Ivanovic, will be one of the 16 scheduled pros to play in this year’s Necker Cup, a five-day, world class Pro-Am Tennis Event on Sir Richard Branson’s Necker Island in The British Virgin Islands.
This year’s event is scheduled for November 12-16th. Sixteen ATP / WTA Tour Players/Legends paired up with sixteen amateur take part in the tennis event and a handicapped scoring format makes it competitive for every player. Teams consist of one pro and up to two amateurs. The winning team in each bracket earns the chance to play in the Necker Cup Finals.
During the tennis event a Tennis Camp is held, called WTT Legends Camp, in partnership with the World Team Tennis. Three days of on court instruction with clinics led by Murphy Jensen, Wayne Bryan and other World Team Tennis Pros.
The Charity ATP/WTA player’s exhibition, dinner, auction and “End of the World” Party take place on the final night. A portion of event profits and 100% of all live and silent auction proceeds go to Virgin Unite, The Rafael Nadal Foundation, The National Tennis Foundation, the BVI LTA, and other leading ATP/WTA player charities. Last year’s Necker Cup Event raised over $1,000,000.
Info on how to participate
Everyone is allowed to take part in the Necker Cup and WTT Legends Camp, but we must say that prices are not for everyone... You can find more info about the events, pricing and accomodation in the following two pdf brochures and on the Necker Cup official website.
Necker Island is situated in the British Virgin Islands. The closest international airport is on Tortola (Beef Island) which is a 35-minute flight from San Juan in Puerto Rico and up to a 1 hour 20 minute flight from Antigua. It is possible to fly to the British Virgin Islands via many parts of the Caribbean, with the most popular routes being via San Juan, Antigua and St. Thomas. By boat Necker is approximately 30 minutes from Tortola and 10 minutes from Virgin Gorda where there is another smaller airport, and this transfer is included in your rate.
Fixed wing aircraft are not able to land on Necker Island, however private aircraft can land at Beef Island and Virgin Gorda (depending on aircraft size) to then transfer by boat or helicopter to Necker.
ARRIVING BY YACHT
It is also possible to anchor a yacht off Necker if guests are going to be sailing in the area.
Necker has a helipad just a short distance from the Main House, but please note that helicopters cannot fly after dark in the British Virgin Islands except in emergencies, as customs must be open to clear the flight. It is possible to fly via helicopter from Virgin Tortola, Virgin Gorda, St. Thomas, San Juan and many other neighbouring islands.
